Microsoft Office 2010 - A first look
If you haven't seen anything about Office 2010 yet, that's because there
isn't much out there about it. But, back on May 15, 2009 I attended a
meeting about the upcoming release of Windows 7 and there was also some
discussion about the release of Office 2010 either late this year, or
sometime in the first half of 2010. At the meeting, it seemed that sometime
in 2010 was most likely and nothing I've heard makes me think that Office
2010 will be released before years end.
There are some visual changes to Outlook itself, and some not so obvious
changes that at first glance you can't see. Below is the current view of
Outlook 2010. They may change some before the actual release candidate
version as this is Alpha. The ribbon has not appeared in Outlook. Why they
didn't do it in version 2007 I've never been able to understand. Anyway,
those of you using Office 2007 can see that other than the ribbon, it looks
pretty much the same on the surface. I'll post other info about this as I
get it.
Here is a look at the new email window. There are a lot of new things to
help make sure the email format is correct and being sent to valid
individuals. Other than the ribbon, no big changes.
One of the biggest changes being made is to the web based side of Outlook
2010. The ribbon, or as Microsoft references it "The Office Fluent user
interface" (Isn't that a mouth-full of nonsense?) should be showing up even
on the web applications side. This should make it better as the web side of
Outlook as it currently exists has the feel of many late 80's early 90's
applications. Crude in other words. So that's some good news.
Other good news is that Office 14 (2010) for the web is supposed to run on
the Mac. At least that is what they said at the 2008 Professional
Developers Conference. It is supposed to run on operating systems other
than Windows. This means that it should run on a Mac and Linux. I will
withhold judgments on that until I actually see it. As I discover more,
I'll let you know.
Anyway, that's the current "skinny" available for now. I should have more
over the next couple of weeks. Currently we have been testing RealeSeller
on Windows 7 and it appears to have no issues and is pretty much the same
(behind the scenes) as Windows Vista, but it is much improved and I'm
looking forward to upgrading all my computers to Windows 7. So that's good
news. We are currently making changes in RealeSeller so that it will be
compatible with Office 2010 when it is available. I'll keep you posted as
to how that is going, but so far so good. Stay tuned for more!
